When You Reach Me

Ok, someone has to help me out here.  I didn't see the appeal of this one.  At all.  I know there's serious Newbery buzz about it and I just fail to see the greatness of this book.  Other than the Madeline L'Engle references I thought it was kind of lame.  Plus, it just didn't seem young enough for Newbery.  Meh.  I just want to know what people see in this one.

There's just something about it. I can't really explain better than that. It came together in a really weird way that I still can't totally get behind (it's another book where you can't classify it as what it is without blowing the Big Reveal) but I really liked Miranda's voice, and the character development.

Very little that's won the Newbery in the past 15 years seems young enough for the Newbery, but that's a different rant. I'm not surprised that it won (not even a little), though a part of me did think the medal would go to Claudette Colvin.
